Does Vaping Cause Oral Health Problems?

Posted on 7/10/2018 by Water's Edge Dental
Does Vaping Cause Oral Health Problems? You might think that you've made a healthy decision if you decided to swap out cigarettes for vaping. However, there are still some risks to your health with vaping, including your mouth. By staying informed, you can make the best decision for your body.

Effects on Gum Tissue

A recent study from Oncotarget looked at the effects of e-cigarette vapors on the gum tissue. They found that these vapors can trigger the release of certain inflammatory proteins in the gums.

This stresses the cells, resulting in damage that could cause oral diseases like gingivitis and periodontitis. Left untreated, gum disease can lead to tooth loss and other serious health complications. Some of the most common symptoms and signs of periodontal disease include:

•  Bleeding and inflamed gums
•  Swollen, painful, and red gums
•  Persistent bad breath
•  Loose teeth
•  Gum recession

Most e-cigarettes contain flavorings to enhance their appeal. Unfortunately, these flavors can make the effects of vaping even worse on the gums by enhancing cellular damage.

Effects on Saliva Production

Despite what some people believe, e-cigarettes do still contain a certain level of nicotine. In its liquid form, this nicotine turns to vapor when inhaled. While it won't lead to bad breath, plaque buildup, or discoloration, it can inhibit your body's ability to produce saliva.

This can leave you susceptible to dry mouth, cavities, bacterial buildup, and decay. The good news is that you can choose just how much nicotine you want your e-cigarettes to contain, so you do have some control over these effects.

Stopping all forms of smoking is the best thing that you can do for your body, including your mouth. Add in a good dental hygiene routine and regular trips to the dentist, and you'll have healthier teeth in no time. Call us today to set up your next cleaning appointment.
