Laser Pain Management

laser dentistryThere is no denying that technology is developing at a rapid rate. As this technology evolves, we often find new applications for processes that might not have seemed feasible before. The use of lasers in dentistry, for example, is one that many individuals probably never thought they would see used daily in dental practices across the country. The fact of the matter, however, is that lasers work well for patients and provide some benefits. At Water’s Edge Dental, we believe our patients deserve the best and most modern care available – that is why we are proud to offer laser pain management.

What is laser pain management?

“Lasers” and “pain management” might not seem like two terms that fit together, but in actuality, they work together incredibly well. Today, we can use lasers for a wide variety of tasks. When they are used in surgery, for example, lasers allow us to target specific areas and avoid damaging soft tissue, which leads to reduced pain for patients after the procedure is completed. Laser pain management simply refers to using laser therapy in various ways to reduce a patient’s pain, whether that pain is from a procedure or a condition that is being treated.

Temporomandibular Joint Pain

Also known as TMJ, this disorder can be a particularly painful one. Even more upsetting is the fact that because the precise causes behind TMJ are often unknown, it is difficult to target a patient’s pain and ensure that they receive the most effective care possible. This is where lasers come into play! Lasers can be used to reduce inflammation and pain linked to TMJ disorders, which can bring patients no small amount of relief.

Post-Surgery Therapy

Another important use of lasers in the field of pain management is when they are used after surgical procedures have been completed. The laser can work to reduce any inflammation that was caused by the surgery – but, even better, it can specifically target the damaged area and relieve pain. In this instance, the laser is used directly for pain relief – you can think of it as taking some pain medication. Instead of taking medication, however, you can come in for a laser treatment and experience the value and pain relief that such a procedure provides.

Trigeminal Neuralgia

There are some dental conditions or disorders that can be painful if not properly managed. Trigeminal neuralgia, however, has to be one of the very worst offenders. Because the nerves that are affected are so close to the brain, it is almost impossible to escape pained caused by damage, and it is, therefore, one of the most dreaded diseases out there. Luckily, lasers are providing a level of pain relief never before known to patients suffering from this issue. Lasers can help the source of the pain in question, and ultimately bring patients a higher quality of life.
