 In the past, dentures were seen as a great invention. Our patients celebrated the day that they got dentures, because it meant that they could eat the foods they want, and they could smile at friends and family. We provided something important for our patients, and these replacement teeth were used for centuries as a way to help our patients. Not that long ago, we would have pulled any remaining teeth our patients had and replaced the teeth with dentures. However, things have changed.
There are now several different types of dentures made of several different materials. We also don’t have to pull all of your teeth for you to have dentures, because we can make partial dentures to fit you. That way, you can keep the teeth that you have, and we can fit you with prosthetic replacement teeth. With either partial or full dentures, you can eat what you want to eat. What Are Dentures?
Dentures have been used for centuries to give people a prosthetic device to chew and smile with. We’ll tell you now that if we had our way, we’d be done using dentures, because then we could save everyone’s teeth. Despite our best efforts, we know that dentures are sometimes necessary for our patients. In fact, over 30 million Americans have lost all of their teeth and need prosthetic devices in order to go about their daily lives. These adults have lost their teeth in a lot of different ways. They lose their teeth from having an accident or an injury. People also lose teeth due to tooth decay or gum disease. Gum disease and tooth decay start out as a small problem, but if you don’t get them treated quickly, they can create a huge tooth loss problem.
By giving patients dentures, we allow them to have replacement teeth. We feel like dentures get a bad rap. We have a lot of patients who rave about their dentures and wouldn’t part with them for any cost. These patients believe that dentures allow them to do all of the things that they love, and also remove their dentures to take care of their oral hygiene. Also, dentures have become a lot more hi-tech. We can fit dentures into our individual patient’s mouths with no problem. Our dentures are made from lighter, more durable materials, such as acrylic and plastic, as well as porcelain. Dentures look more natural and fit more comfortably than ever before.
