Bad Oral Health Leading to Sensory Problems

Posted on 5/23/2022 by Water's Edge Dental
Bad Oral Health Leading to Sensory ProblemsDid you know that bad oral health can lead to sensory problems? It is true! Poor oral hygiene can cause bacteria to build up in your mouth, leading to inflammation and infection. It can affect your sense of taste, smell, and even hearing. Here is what you should know.

What Is the Connection Between Oral Health and Sensory Problems?

Your sense of taste is linked to your oral health in many ways. For example, when you have a cold, your sense of smell is often diminished, making food less appealing. Likewise, certain medications can dry out the mouth, affecting taste and producing saliva. It can lead to xerostomia, making food taste bland and causing difficulty in swallowing. There is also a strong connection between oral health and a sense of touch. For example, people with gum disease often have increased sensitivity in their gums and may find brushing and flossing painful. Similarly, people with teeth that are cracked or chipped may experience hypersensitivity to hot and cold temperatures. Finally, evidence suggests that poor oral health can impact balance. The inner ear contains a small amount of fluid, which helps maintain equilibrium. If this fluid becomes infected, it can throw off balance and cause dizziness. In severe cases, it can even cause vertigo.

How To Take Are of Oral Hygiene?

Good oral hygiene starts with a healthy diet. Eating plenty of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains can help keep your gums and teeth healthy. You should also limit sugary and acidic foods, contributing to tooth decay. In addition to eating a healthy diet, you should brush your teeth two times a day and also floss at least once daily. Also, regular dental checkups can help catch problems early and prevent them from becoming more serious.

If you think your oral health may be impacting your sense of taste, smell, or hearing, talk to our dentist. They can help you determine the cause of the problem and develop a plan to improve your oral health.
