Is There Anything You Can Do if You Lose Your Tooth's Enamel?

Is There Anything You Can Do if You Lose Your Tooth's Enamel? The enamel of your teeth protects the teeth. It is one of the hardest substances in the body, but that does not mean it will last forever. It is possible to wear down your enamel and you can end up with spots on your teeth where the enamel is gone.

That means your teeth do not have the protection they need. When that happens, you need to know what to do. You also need to know how to prevent it from ever happening.

Prevention is the First Step

It is much easier to prevent the erosion of enamel instead of trying to restore what is already lost. Prevention is done through good oral hygiene habits. That includes brushing twice a day with a good toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. It also includes flossing and cleaning of the tongue to remove as much of the bacteria that eats away at the enamel as possible.

Other keys to reducing the dangers of enamel erosion include avoiding foods that are highly acidic and foods that are high in sugar. Regular visits to our office and professional cleaning will help you keep the enamel on your teeth as long as possible.

Restoring and Repairing Enamel

If you do start to lose your enamel, all is not lost. It is possible to restore and repair the enamel of the teeth. Fluoride is a mineral that can help rebuild the enamel. Fluoride can come from drinking tap water, toothpastes and supplements. It is also possible for us to apply a fluoride gel to the surface of your teeth to stimulate the growth of the enamel. A dental sealant on some of the teeth can add additional protection to prevent a cavity.

Don't underestimate the importance of enamel for your oral health. Learn how to prevent the erosion and what to do to restore the enamel to help you maintain good oral health.
