Is There Such a Thing as Too Much Flossing?

Posted on 7/10/2019 by Water's Edge Dental
Is There Such a Thing as Too Much Flossing? It is important for you to floss your teeth every time you brush your teeth – which should be twice daily. At the very least, you'll want to make sure that you're flossing your teeth once a day.

This is because the quality is of more importance than quantity, which means that if you floss your teeth really well one time, you're doing much better than if you floss your teeth poorly two or more times each day.

Too Much of a Good Thing
Flossing your teeth too often can seriously damage the gum tissue that surrounds your teeth. Besides flossing too often, this can also happen when you apply too much pressure to your gums while flossing. You'll be able to know that you're doing this because your gums will bleed. When you continue to floss your teeth too often, over a long period of time this will destroy your gum line.

How to Floss Properly

You should floss your teeth before brushing them so the plaque and food particles are loosened and can be brushed away. Doing so also enables your fluoride toothpaste to make better contact with your teeth.

Make sure you use about 18 inches of floss, holding it tightly between your thumb and forefinger so you can guide it gently between your teeth. You want to get in between your gum line and each tooth in your mouth.
By correctly flossing the proper number of times each day you'll ensure that your mouth is as healthy as possible.

Of course, it's important to understand that this doesn't guarantee that you won't ever have any issues with your teeth. It just means that this is a great way to significantly reduce the likelihood of developing such issues. With this in mind, we highly recommend you take your time and properly floss your teeth at least once daily.
