Tips for Caring for New Veneers

Posted on 5/25/2019 by Water's Edge Dental
Tips for Caring for New VeneersIf you make an investment in your smile with porcelain veneers, you'll want them to last for as long as possible. Caring for your new veneers properly can help to extend their life, and if you follow these tips, you'll enjoy a beautiful smile for many years to come.

Make Dental Hygiene a Priority

Just because you have veneers doesn't mean that you no longer need to care for your teeth. You still need to brush at least twice a day using a non-abrasive toothpaste. Floss daily to remove debris and plaque caught between the teeth, and consider adding an antiseptic mouthwash to your dental hygiene routine.

Avoid Teeth Staining

Just like your natural teeth, your veneers can stain. Smoking is a major source of staining, but even drinking and eating dark-colored foods and beverages can contribute to stains. Soda, coffee, red wine, berries, and soy sauce are all problematic. Avoiding these activities can keep your veneers white and bright for as long as possible.

Treat Bruxism

If you clench and grind your teeth, especially at night, you'll want to treat this habit. For many people, this involves wearing a custom night guard when you sleep. The guard will protect your teeth and veneers from damage related to pressure from grinding. If you play sports, you should also consider a mouth guard to protect your smile during these activities.

Watch What You Chew
Veneers are strong, but they aren't indestructible. They can still chip and break if you chew on especially hard food items. You should take care to avoid chewing on hard items like ice, fingernails, and pens, and don't use your teeth as tools to open packages.
