Times When You May Need a Soft Tissue Graft

Posted on 10/15/2018 by Water's Edge Dental
Times When You May Need a Soft Tissue GraftSoft tissue grafting is typically completed to combat gum recession. Over brushing, trauma, poor tooth positioning, and most commonly, gum disease, are the biggest gum recession culprits.

A soft tissue graft can protect the teeth from the effects of gum recession, and it can also improve the appearance of your smile.

Soft Tissue Grafting to Treat Receding Gums

Gum recession is a result of gum tissue that pulls away from the teeth. This exposes more of the tooth and its root. You may experience sensitivity to hot and cold and put this vulnerable portion of the teeth at risk for decay. Additionally, gum recession can lead to damage of the supporting bone structure.

Reasons for Soft Tissue Grafting

Gum or soft tissue grafting has many uses, and recent dental technology developments have made the process easier than ever. There are three primary reasons you might choose to undergo a soft tissue graft:

•  Improve the health of your gums. Gum disease can destroy soft tissue quite quickly. Soft tissue grafting stops the loss of bone and tissue, and it protects exposed roots from complications.
•  Improve the appearance of your smile. Gum recession can make your teeth appear too long or uneven. Soft tissue grafting can be used as a cosmetic procedure to make your smile look more symmetrical.
•  Alleviate pain or discomfort. When the roots are exposed, you can feel significant pain or discomfort, especially when eating cold or hot foods. A soft tissue graft will cover up the exposed root, decreasing pain and sensitivity.
