When you are expecting a child, there are a number of steps you have to take in order to help protect the health of the unborn person you are carrying. One of these things has to do with the proper care of your teeth and gums.

You may not realize this, but proper gum health affects your entire body, not just the tissue in your oral cavity. If you have an infection in your gum tissue, the toxins from that infection can enter your bloodstream and circulate throughout your body.

This, in turn, can lead to issues elsewhere in the body. It stands to reason that, because the developing fetus derives its nutrient supply from your body, avoiding elevated levels of toxins is important-which means that protecting your teeth and gums from developing an infection can actually help protect the baby and promote normal, healthy development.

Keeping Things Clean

It is always a good idea to be sure that you are flossing and brushing regularly, as well as coming to see us for your routine dental cleaning. However, for the reasons noted above, this is especially important when you are carrying a child to term.

Be sure that you brush your teeth at least twice each day, and preferably after each meal. When brushing, take your time and make sure you are getting it right. Further, you need to be sure that you floss every day, helping to keep the bacteria population in your mouth at reduced levels.

Taking these steps will help to keep your teeth and gums healthy, and your mouth will thank you for it. In addition, this will help to protect and maintain the health of the developing fetus, adding to the list of reasons for faithfully following proper oral hygiene routine while you are pregnant.
