What Is the Difference Between Molars and Premolars?

It is challenging to remember each of the four types of teeth in your mouth, especially when some of your teeth have similar-sounding names. While both molars and premolars sound similar, there are differences between these two types of teeth. Here are some similarities and differences between molars and premolars and how to care for both.
What Are the Four Types of Teeth I Have?
All adults have four types of teeth, and each type has a different role. Your incisors, which are located in the front of your mouth, are your smallest and thinnest teeth. You use incisors to slice and bite your food to separate it from the larger pieces of food, like corn on the cob. Adults have eight incisors in all, four in the top jaw and four in the lower jaw. Adults also have pointy teeth next to the incisors, which are called canines. Canines are pointed for ripping and tearing into your food, such as fried chicken. You have four canine teeth as an adult. Adults also have both molars and premolars. Usually, you have eight premolars and up to 12 molars in your mouth.
How Are Molars and Premolars the Same?
Molars and premolars are unique teeth. They are the only teeth in your mouth with uneven biting surfaces. These surfaces allow adults to grind and chew their food into smaller pieces so it is easier to digest. Also, both molars and premolars have two tooth roots rather than one.
What Is the Difference Between Molars and Premolars?
Molars are both the thickest and largest teeth in your mouth because their primary purpose is to chew and grind food. While premolars are also used for chewing and biting into food, premolars also help your face retain its shape. Without premolars, the face can look sunken or misshapen.
