Dental Crowns
Boise, ID

Dental CrownsIf you want to live a healthy life, a good first step is to take care of your teeth. That might sound like a bit of an odd statement but just think about everything that your teeth do for you. They help you eat, they help you speak, and they even help protect your throat from contaminants. That means that should your teeth become starkly unhealthy or become sickly, your quality of life could take a negative hit. With that said, there are a variety of ways in today’s world to help fix teeth issues to ensure the oral health of the patient in question. At Water’s Edge Dental, we are proud to offer crowns as one of our tooth restoration options.

What are crowns?

Crowns are a type of tooth restoration that is applied to teeth in a variety of different circumstances. You can think of crowns a kind of helmet for your teeth – but unlike real helmets, these are designed to match your natural tooth as closely as possible to ensure a close and comfortable fit. Crowns can be made out of a variety of materials, including porcelain, amalgam, or even metal – gold, in particular, is a rather common option for those individuals in need of a crown placement.

Is placing a crown painful?

Many patients want to know more about the crown placement process. This is, of course, entirely understandable – we all want to know what is going on with our teeth, regardless of the procedure in question. When it comes to crown placement, the first thing you should know is that it will probably take a few visits.

We will first need to examine your teeth to ensure that there is nothing that would prevent the crown from successfully protecting the tooth in question. They will then take a mold of your tooth to send to the lab so that the crown can be made. Just before that, however, you will need to make a decision regarding what material you would like to use in your crown. Porcelain is a good option for front teeth, while metal is a better option for back teeth – the metal adds extra strength that can better stand up against the pressure of chewing.

Then, we will send the mold off and prepare your tooth for placement. Once the crown is ready, you will come in for the fitting. At Water’s Edge Dental, will take their time to ensure that the crown fits well and that your bite is functional before they permanently bond it in place. Once they are certain everything is as it should be, the crown is bonded to your tooth, and the procedure is over!

How should I care for my crown?

You should brush and floss your crown just like you would your natural teeth. Doing this will ensure that it stays in good shape and does not become discolored or damaged.
